I grew up about ten miles from Jersey, in southeast PA, and used to love running in the Pine Barrens. It's surprising to a lot of people that there's a pretty decent chunk of nice woods tucked into a state that's not known for being natural.

We love Belmar in Monmouth County but there are so many family oriented towns where you can rent a house on VRBO for a week or a month. Park the car for days, walk to the beach. Swim and body surf all day then walk home to eat or go to one of a zillion great local restaurants. It is so restful. If you have the interest take a short drive to one of the great family friendly boardwalks like Point Pleasant. Go to the arcades, eat the junk food and soak in the sounds and sights of summer. Point Pleasant has a great little aquraium to get out of the sun. Go to Monmouth Park and watch horse racing or up to Highlands to see the historic light house. Even as my kids become teens and tweens they still love it every year.
