Wonderful tips for travelling with children, state by state. I think it's key for visual literacy to take children to art museums, and offer two tips for making this most engaging and fun:

1. Download this Famous Painting ebook which lists some of the world's most famous paintings located in museums throughout the U.S. (and Europe, it you're so lucky). You can sort the list by city and art museum to create an itinerary for major art museums. Here's the link:
http://www.themasterpiececards.com/famous-paintings-ebook/

2. I used to kickoff every art museum visit by -- gulp -- hitting the gift store first, letting our boys choose three works of art they were drawn to. Then we'd head off for a treasure hunt - by the time the treasures were found, they'd seen tons of works of art, and we'd had just enough time at that art museum.

I found I wanted to learn about paintings before we were onsite, which inspired me to create a set of art history flashcards of influential, famous paintings in major art museums. Now, we can read about the paintings before we go -- when we see them at the art museum, they truly feel like old friends! If you're interested, check out www.TheMasterpieceCards.com.

When I'm traveling to New York City I book my hotels at http://www.quikbook.com/. Their super flexible cancellation policies come in handy if my family's plans change.

Our most favorite family vacation ever... (my son's phrase) was our trip to Lake George. However, we didn't stay at Lake George. We stayed about 10 miles away in a little town - the name I don't remember - and we stayed in a house overlooking the Hudson River. Perfection.

Lake George has something for everyone in the family - though my son (then 5) really only wanted to stay at the lake.
