When you reach Cali I would suggest the SF Zoo, Alcatraz, Six Flags, Disneyland, SC beach boardwalk, and a play/opera in SF or LA or 1 of the big cities.

I just wanted to mention again the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Twitter hardly gave me enough space to say how much fun it would be for kids. There is great spring-fed swimming in the creeks that run throughout the park. In the 30s the CCC built up small dams to create little swimming holes all over. You can swim and relax and we saw many kids climbing over the little waterfalls that were created.
There were also many families "hiking" through the creeks in their water shoes. The swimming opportunities were definitely unique and you can even camp (in tents) relatively near the creek in a few places.
