**Hi Todd, Beijing was a super kid-friendly place. Just go for it whenever the opportunity presents, whether China, Japan, Thailand or Vietnam. Ex-pats in Beijing think Thailand is heavenly with (and without) kids.

** Hi Cissy, Laura sent a bunch; it was hard to pick!

** Hi Todd, Thanks, Laura and I are so glad that you enjoyed it. Save up those pennies and go to Asia with one of your kids or grandkids - a few years back, I got a great package deal to Hong Kong and Tokyo with my daughter (air, hotel and tours if I wanted them) through Go Today.com.

Great post. Wow. Things I never thought of when considering a trip to Asia/China. Heck, this makes me take a step back and realize it's not as easy as buying a plane ticket. Never used a squatty.

My granddaughters are six this year, and I wonder how they'd do in such a foreign place. Heck, I wonder how my 18 year old would do. He's always wanted to travel to Asia like me.

Thanks so much for sharing.

I agree with steamykitchen, that travel brings our awareness to parts of ourselves that we may not have acknowledged before. It can be cathartic and also, beautiful.

what a wonderful post! I visited China for the first time in my life last year. I'm Chinese American, born in HK but never considered HK part of China, even when the lease expired. I went with my husband and my family but decided to have our boys 3 and 4 stay home with my in-laws.

It was magical.

Since I could remember, I had always viewed China as the "other place" and refused to acknowledge that HK was part of China. Then, coming to the US at the age of 4, I then took on the "I'm an American Citizen" stance and had always viewed China as that "poor, poor country."

I still can't describe in words the range of emotions that I felt during our trip. I don't think I can right now, but maybe one day I'll write a book about it.

But I'm sure that I'll be bringing my boys on my next trip.

Very nice! I don't think people can appreciate how much a trip like this can mean to a young child. My daughter's Godmother is in her 60's and her parents took a trip around the world when she was 5 and she swears it has had the biggest impact of anything on her life. ( We did not know about this experience until we told her about our world trip). Also my niece went to Japan at 5 and now at 13 it is one of her fondest memories.
By preparing like you did and by keeping it alive after you return you can continue to make the most out of this unique experience!

BTW My daughter actually has an easier time with the squat toilets ( also popular in France and other parts of Europe) than I do. We bring those disposable funnels that fit into a purse or pocket. ;)
