You make a great case for teaching our kids about the history of war, Sheila. It's a brave but necessary thing to do, opening your mind and heart to that atrocity. (I'm still recovering from my visit to Dachau, 20 years later).

We visited the Normandy beaches and the Normandy American Cemetary years ago. Our kids were too young to be disturbed by it, but my husband and I were profoundly moved. The place itself is so beautiful and ordinary, the history so horrifying.

I was fortunate enough to live in Germany for 6 years. During that time I got to visit a lot of historic places - also in the Czech Republic, (where Patton is worshiped as a great hero) England and Austria. I took my family to Dachau, which is just outside of Munich, so they could learn of the terrible things we can do to each other if we don't learn from the past.

Thanks, Phil. We have been to Bastogne, but not Verdun (figured my kid did have her WWI intake limits.)

I had her watch the movie "Patton" before we went to Bastogne. She said, "That guy's a jerk!"

From the mouths of babes....

Nice article.

If you have a little more time, it's a pleasant drive back across Belgium to find two more battlefield locations that are highly worth a visit.

First, there is the "battle of the bulge" near Bastogne.

Second, just across the French border is Verdun.

If Flanders fields make you melancholy, a visit to Verdun will simply turn your stomach. The devastation and senseless destruction there still hangs in the air. And the tomb on top of the hill. It's that large for a reason.
