** Hi oemperor, sometimes you can justifiably yell at them to "look out the window" because there's stuff to see, but other times....maybe not, so it's good to have backup.

** Hi BrandyS -- I hear you on that one; my son tends to get carsick and in fact we had a little barf-o-moment just last week on a short road trip. Gee, thanks for the strawberry pancakes note, that's a lovely mental image. :)

I remember one particularly long road trip with my then-6yo son. This was before incar entertainmenet systems were very affordable, so we handed him the laptop to keep himself occupied. Which worked great until he too became carsick, and projectile vomited strawberry pancakes all over himself and the interior of the car. God bless the tyke, he managed to keep the mess OFF the computer.

Three years ago, before my daughter (then 14) got her own iPod, we planned a cross country trip from California to Illinois. My daughter was not that enthused about the trip, so my father in law made sure that his laptop (with DVD capability) could be powered from within the car.

If she had been younger, perhaps audio books (which were then available on CD and cassette) would have done the trick.
