Magical Bali

Kids are adored in Bali (Scarborough photo)Ask me the name of one place in the world that I know I want to return to, and I’ll say Bali, Indonesia.

Whenever I see articles like this one about “secret hotels of Bali” in Budget Travel Online, I give a little sigh of longing for the place.

We had a lovely family visit there a few years back, and it’s high on my To Do list to return (now with two kids) to see it again. Even something as hokey as an elephant ride was enchanting for my daughter, and the scenery is simply stunning and exotic.

You never know what kids are going to like; as a 5 year-old she adored the evening dance and music performances at Ubud Palace.

There is certainly a beach scene (and clubbing if you can find a babysitter) but inland towns like the artist center at Ubud may have more appeal and activities for families (ask about the Monkey Forest!)

It’s relatively easy to find bargain packages to the area (here’s an example from Frommer’s) and once you get there you can really enjoy yourself on a budget without feeling deprived.

To plan a visit, consult BootsnAll’s own BaliBlog, the Bali Tourism Board Web site or the “Hello Bali” magazine.

Whatever you do, just go. It’s truly a magical place.
